Policy/Advocacy

Neighborhood Partnerships views supporting advocacy for improved public policies as one of our highest impact areas on the lives of low income Oregonians.  Neighborhood Partnerships focuses its policy efforts in several areas.

Two of our most successful examples are:

Messaging. In 2003, Neighborhood Partnerships convened a group of 30 community development industry leaders in a nine month effort to redefine the way we talked about affordable housing. That workgroup opened the door for successful collaboration, paved the way for the Housing Alliance, and taught us that the way we talk about our work has a critical impact on our ability to build champions and support.

The Berkeley Media Studies Group did a case study of this work, http://www.bmsg.org/pdfs/Issue16.pdf

Compelling housing messages are summarized here.

Preserving Oregon Housing. Since 2007 Neighborhood Partnerships has been involved with an effort to preserve affordable rental housing throughout the state of Oregon. Not only will this effort help our hardworking neighbors maintain their housing, but it will continue to bring federal dollars to Oregon.  In the 2008 special legislative session, the Oregon legislature dedicated $1 million to this effort.  Find out more at www.preserveoregonhousing.org.
