What if affordable housing never expired?
In the U.S., “affordable housing” usually comes with an expiration date. Vienna took a different path: almost half its housing is permanently affordable, decommodified for good, with rent tied to what a building costs, not what the market will bear. Portland is studying how to build something like it here. Sign up to follow the campaign and know when your voice can make a difference.
Housing the City is coming to print
Housing the City: A Beginner’s Guide to Vienna Social Housing, the coursebook that grew out of Portland’s own delegation to Vienna, has been a frequently requested resource since it launched. It’s already free to read online, and we’re working on a print-on-demand edition so you can keep a copy on your desk, share it at a tenant meeting, or bring it to Council testimony. Sign up and we’ll email you the moment you can order one.
